Odunlade Adekola Jonathan is a leading Nigerian actor, filmmaker, director and producer whose work has shaped Yoruba cinema and the wider Nollywood industry for nearly three decades. Odunlade Adekola Early Life and Background
Born on 31 December 1976 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, he is a native of Otun Ekiti in Ekiti State. He grew up in a Christian household. His father, Pastor Nathaniel A. Adekola, served as a choirmaster before becoming a pastor in the Christ Apostolic Church in Abeokuta. His mother was a deaconess in the same church. The family environment placed strong emphasis on faith and discipline.
He attended St. John’s Primary School and later St. Peter’s College, both in Abeokuta. After obtaining his West African School Certificate, he enrolled at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic where he earned a diploma. Years later, while already established in the industry, he returned to formal education and received a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Lagos in May 2018.
His interest in performance began early through church activities. A friend later introduced him to a local theatre group, which led him toward professional work.
Odunlade Adekola Career Journey
He started acting in 1996 and joined the Association of Nigeria Theatre Arts Practitioners the same year. Early roles were modest, but steady appearances helped him gain experience and industry contacts. The turning point came in 2003 with the lead role in Ishola Durojaye’s film Asiri Gomina Wa. The performance brought him wider recognition and marked his rise as a bankable name in Yoruba movies.
From that point he worked at a high volume, starring in, scripting, producing and directing numerous titles. He became especially known for energetic, larger than life characters that combined humour with dramatic intensity. Titles such as Sunday Dagboru, Alani Pamolekun, Mufu Oloosha Oko and Adebayo Aremu Abere helped define his public image. His ability to move between comedy and serious roles expanded his audience.
In December 2015 he released music, adding another creative outlet. He later founded Odunlade Adekola Film Production, which has produced commercial films and provided training opportunities for emerging actors. Several performers who passed through the company have gone on to build their own careers. He has also served as a brand ambassador for companies including Goldberg and Globacom.
Over the years he has moved comfortably between Yoruba language productions and English language Nollywood projects, appearing in films that reach both local and international audiences.
