Uche Jombo Biography

Uche Jombo is a Nigerian actress, screenwriter, film producer and director whose work has left a clear mark on Nollywood over more than two decades. Known for her range both in front of and behind the camera, she has appeared in hundreds of films while steadily expanding into writing, producing and directing projects that often tackle real social issues.

Early Life and Background

She was born on 28 December 1979 in Abiriba, Abia State. Raised primarily by her mother, Mrs. Ngozi Jombo, after the death of her father, Sir Nelson Jombo, she grew up in a large family as one of nine children. Her early years included time in Enugu and Aba before she pursued higher education.

From a young age she showed interest in performance. Her mother enrolled her in the local church drama group, where she regularly took on roles and earned recognition as one of the top drama students in secondary school. The church even covered part of her secondary school fees through a scholarship tied to her drama involvement. She later studied Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Calabar and completed further training in Computer Programming at the Federal University of Technology, Minna.

Her path into professional acting began almost by chance in the late 1990s. While delivering a letter at a location where auditions were underway, she was asked if she could act, read a script on the spot, and walked away with her first role.

Career Journey

Jombo entered Nollywood in 1999 with the film Visa to Hell. That debut opened the door to a steady stream of roles. Early credits included Girls Hostel and Fire Love. She quickly became a familiar face in both lead and supporting parts across dozens of productions each year during the industry’s rapid expansion phase.

By the mid-2000s she had begun writing. Screenplays she wrote or co-wrote include The Celebrity, Games Men Play, Girls in the Hood and A Time to Love. In 2008 she established Uche Jombo Studios and started producing her own projects. Notable early productions include Holding Hope, Nollywood Hustlers and Damage, the last of which focused on domestic violence and earned attention for its subject matter.

She moved into directing after the birth of her son, beginning in 2015 with films such as Lost in Us, How I Saved My Marriage and the true-life drama Heaven on My Mind. Later work includes the football comedy-drama Onyegwu and the ROK Studios series Doctor Love. Across acting, writing, producing and directing, her filmography now runs well past 200 titles, with more recent appearances in projects such as Blood Sisters, Shanty Town and other contemporary releases.

Industry challenges were part of the early years. She has spoken about low pay, difficult working conditions and moments when she nearly left the profession. Persistence and a growing range of skills kept her active and allowed her to take greater creative control over time. She also served for a period as a Globacom brand ambassador.

Notable Works and Achievements

Key acting roles that stand out include performances in Silent Scandals, Holding Hope, Damage, Lies Men Tell and Heaven on My Mind. Her production and writing credits on films addressing relationships, family and social themes have been equally important to her reputation.

Awards recognition has come steadily. Among the honours are Best Supporting Actress at the Africa Movie Academy Awards in 2008, Best Supporting Actress at the Best of Nollywood Awards in 2010 for Silent Scandals, Best Actress at the City People Entertainment Awards, Best Actress in a Leading Role at the Best of Nollywood Awards in 2013, and further wins at the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards. She has also received state-level honours from Abia and recognition for her broader contributions to the industry.

Beyond entertainment she runs the non-governmental organisation Uche Jombo and You, focused on supporting Nigerian youth.

Personal Life

In 2012 she married Kenney Rodriguez, a Puerto Rican-American, in a private beach ceremony in Puerto Rico. The couple welcomed a son, Matthew Chinedu Rodriguez, in May 2015. She has generally kept family matters private, sharing only occasional glimpses of her role as a mother. Details about the current status of the marriage remain limited in public reporting.

Off screen she maintains an interest in youth development through her foundation and has spoken about the discipline and structure that education and early challenges instilled in her.

Her body of work reflects a practical approach to storytelling and a willingness to take on multiple roles within a single production. From the early days of Visa to Hell through to contemporary directing and producing credits, she has built a career defined by consistency and expanding creative responsibility rather than any single defining moment. That steady presence continues to shape the kinds of stories Nigerian audiences see on screen.
