Alexx Ekubo Biography

Alexx Ekubo stood among the most recognisable faces in contemporary Nollywood, a charismatic actor, model and humanitarian whose presence brought warmth and style to screens across Nigeria and beyond. For more than a decade he delivered memorable performances in romantic comedies, dramas and big-budget hits, while also using his platform for social causes. His sudden passing in May 2026 at the age of 40 left the industry and fans reflecting on a career that felt both polished and deeply human.

Early life and background

Born Alexx Ikenna Ekubo-Okwaraeke on 10 April 1986 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, he traced his roots to Arochukwu in Abia State. He was the second of four children. His father worked as a petroleum marketer, a job that meant the family moved often across different Nigerian cities. His mother, a fashion designer and businesswoman, helped shape the sense of style that later became part of his public image.

That constant movement gave him an easy adaptability. He grew up speaking English, Igbo and Hausa fluently. Primary school took place at K. Kotun in Lagos. Secondary education followed at Federal Government College, Daura in Katsina State. He later studied law at the University of Calabar, graduating with an LLB in 2008, and also obtained a diploma in mass communication from Calabar Polytechnic. The formal training never led him into a courtroom. Performance and the camera held stronger appeal.

His first taste of acting came early. As a teenager he landed a minor role in Lancelot Oduwa Imasuen’s Sinners in the House. The experience planted a seed. Modelling work followed in the years after, building the confidence and visibility that would soon open bigger doors.

Career journey

The real turning point arrived in 2010 when he competed in the Mr Nigeria pageant and finished as first runner-up. The exposure introduced him to a national audience and connected him with industry players. Professional roles began to arrive more steadily. Early parts in films such as Ladies Men and In the Cupboard showed range and screen presence.

Weekend Getaway in 2012 proved decisive. His portrayal of Andre Dikeh earned critical notice and the Best Supporting Actor prize at the Best of Nollywood Awards the following year. From that point the offers multiplied. He moved comfortably between romantic leads, comedic supporting turns and more layered dramatic characters. Appearances in Lagos Cougars, The Bling Lagosians, Omo Ghetto: The Saga, A Sunday Affair and Áfàméfùnà: An Nwa Boi Story kept him visible and relevant across different production styles and box-office scales.

He also became a familiar face outside pure cinema. The 2013 music video for Yemi Alade’s “Johnny” turned him into a continental pop-culture figure overnight. Television credits included popular series such as Tinsel and AY’s Crib. Over time he accumulated more than a hundred film and television credits, working with many of Nollywood’s leading directors and producers. In later years he expanded into production, deepening his stake in the stories being told.

Recognition followed the work. Beyond the early Best of Nollywood wins, he collected the Nollywood Rising Star award at the BEFFTA Awards in London, Favourite Male African International Emerging Screen Talent at the Screen Nation Awards, Best Actor of the Year at Best of Nollywood in 2016, and further acting honours in subsequent years. In 2020 he was named among the Most Influential People of African Descent under 40 by the United Nations-linked MIPAD programme for contributions to entertainment and social development. An honorary doctorate in arts and culture from ISCG University in Benin Republic arrived in 2021, alongside national recognition for his charity efforts.

Notable works and achievements

Certain projects stand out in public memory. Weekend Getaway remains the breakthrough that announced him as a leading man. The Bling Lagosians and Omo Ghetto: The Saga placed him inside some of the decade’s biggest commercial successes. Áfàméfùnà brought a later career nomination at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards. Across these roles he often played charismatic, stylish characters who felt relatable rather than distant, a quality that helped him maintain a strong connection with audiences.

Off screen he invested time in humanitarian work focused on youth empowerment and social causes. The combination of screen success and quiet advocacy earned him a place on best-dressed lists and respect within industry circles that valued professionalism as much as popularity.

Personal life

He preferred to keep his private world away from the spotlight. A highly public engagement ended in 2021. In the years that followed he protected his personal relationships even more carefully. After his death the family confirmed that he had been privately married and was a father. Those closest to him described a man of faith who faced his final illness with quiet strength.

Fashion remained a consistent interest. He appeared regularly on best-dressed lists and carried himself with the same polished ease off camera as on it. Colleagues often spoke of his kindness and the way he supported younger talents coming into the industry.

Alexx Ekubo’s career traced a clear path from curious teenager on a film set to one of Nollywood’s reliable leading men. He brought charm, consistency and a touch of continental flair to an industry that continues to grow. The films remain, the awards stand, and the impression he left on colleagues and audiences is still easy to recall. In an industry that moves quickly, that kind of lasting presence is rare.
