Sola Sobowale Biography

Sola Sobowale is a Nigerian actress, screenwriter, director and producer whose work has shaped Nollywood across television, Yoruba cinema and English-language films for more than three decades. Known for bringing depth and intensity to complex female characters, she remains one of the industry’s most respected and versatile figures.

Sola Sobowale Early life and background

Born on 26 December 1965 in Ondo State to Joseph Olagookun, a retired principal, and Esther Olagookun, a former headmistress, she grew up in a home that valued education and discipline. Both parents worked as teachers and expected their children to follow similar paths. Her father wanted her to become a teacher while her mother preferred nursing.

She completed her primary and secondary education in Ondo State. After secondary school she trained briefly in secretarial studies and catering, but her interest lay elsewhere. Her brother-in-law, the late musician, actor and University of Ibadan lecturer Tunji Oyelana (popularly known as Sura the Tailor), recognised her talent and encouraged her. He helped enrol her at the University of Ibadan, first in the Department of Music. She later switched to Theatre Arts and graduated with a degree in the discipline. Oyelana also introduced her to the stage and screen, giving her an early foothold in the industry.

Her first professional appearances came in the early years of Nigerian television. She featured in the long-running series The Village Headmaster and Lola Fani-Kayode’s Mirror in the Sun. She also appeared in stage productions, including Femi Osofisan’s Our Husband Has Gone Mad Again. Her entry into Yoruba cinema came through the Awada Kerikeri group led by Adebayo Salami. The role that made her a household name arrived in 2001. In Wale Adenuga’s television drama Super Story: Oh Father, Oh Daughter, she played the sharp-tongued, calculating Toyin Tomato. The character’s streetwise dialogue and memorable presence turned her into a star overnight. Audiences still recall lines from the series years later.

In the years that followed she worked steadily in both English and Yoruba productions. She appeared in Tade Ogidan’s Dangerous Twins (2004) and Family on Fire. She also began writing, producing and directing. In 2010 she wrote, produced and directed Ohun Oko Somida, which starred Adebayo Salami.

Around 2004 she stepped away from the industry for an extended period. She relocated to the United Kingdom to be closer to her children who were studying there. During those years she took on various jobs, including cleaning and caregiving, while prioritising family. She returned to Nigeria for the audition of The Wedding Party in 2016 and resumed acting full time.
