Kayode Kasum Biography

Kayode Kasum is a Nigerian film director and producer whose work has become a defining part of contemporary Nollywood. Born on 2 February 1992 in Lagos State, he has directed multiple box office successes and streaming hits, earning recognition as one of the industry’s most consistent and commercially successful filmmakers. By 2024 he ranked among the top directors by domestic gross, with a growing list of films that connect with everyday Nigerian audiences while traveling well beyond local screens.

Early Life and Background

Kasum grew up in Lagos. He attended Lagos State Model College, Kankon, Badagry for secondary school before proceeding to Yaba College of Technology. As a child he was quiet and spent a lot of time daydreaming, inventing characters and stories in his head. That habit later became useful in his work.

After school he entered the industry through practical roles rather than formal film school training. He worked as a motion graphics designer at Wale Adenuga Productions, makers of the long running Super Story series. He later took on producing and channel management duties at African Cable Television and headed production at an advertising agency. Those early jobs taught him post production, storytelling under constraints, and the business side of content. He also shot a series of short films while saving money for bigger projects.

Career Journey

His first feature, Dognapped, arrived in 2017. It was Nigeria’s first live action animated film and starred names such as Odunlade Adekola, Julius Agwu and Tope Tedela. The production was self funded from savings and took a full year of post production because of the animation work. It was a tough, nearly bankrupting experience, yet it opened doors.

The real breakthrough came with Oga Bolaji in 2018. The quiet drama about a retired musician whose life changes after meeting a young girl screened at more than twenty festivals across six continents and received theatrical distribution in the United States and Nordic countries. It established Kasum as a director capable of emotional storytelling with broad appeal.

From there the projects arrived steadily. Sugar Rush (2019) became one of the year’s highest grossing Nollywood films, eventually crossing the ₦100 million mark at the box office. In 2020 he delivered This Lady Called Life, Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards and Fate of Alakada, the last of which performed strongly at the cinemas. He also directed large volumes of television, including more than 10,000 minutes of M-Net telenovelas Unbroken and Riona, making him one of the youngest directors to handle major Africa Magic series.

Later work showed range. Soole (2021) was filmed largely on a moving bus. Ile Owo (2022) marked his first psychological horror. He directed episodes of Netflix’s Far From Home and the musical Obara’m. In 2023 Afamefuna: An Nwa Boi Story became the most watched Nigerian film on Netflix Nigeria for a period and highlighted the Igbo apprenticeship system. Ajosepo ranked among the top grossing films of 2024. More recent titles include Reel Love (2025), which performed strongly at the box office.

Across more than a decade he has moved between comedy, drama, romance, horror and television while maintaining a clear focus on stories ordinary Nigerians can recognise. He has also edited several of his own films and founded Film Trybe (sometimes referenced as FilmTribe Media) with collaborators to keep producing work on their own terms.

Notable Works and Achievements

Key titles include Dognapped, Oga Bolaji, Sugar Rush, This Lady Called Life, Fate of Alakada, Kambili: The Whole 30 Yards, Quam’s Money, Soole, Ile Owo, Far From Home, Afamefuna, Ajosepo and Reel Love. Several of these sit among Nigeria’s highest grossing films of their respective years. By late 2025 twelve of his projects appeared in the country’s top 100 highest grossing list.

Recognition has followed. He received a nomination for The Future Awards Africa Prize for Filmmaking in 2019. Multiple Best of Nollywood and Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards nominations arrived for directing, writing and other categories. In 2025 he won the AMVCA Trailblazer Award, acknowledging sustained impact rather than a single breakthrough. His films have screened and won prizes at festivals in Canada, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Kenya and elsewhere.

Personal Life

Kasum keeps his private life largely out of the public eye. Available information indicates he is not married. He has spoken in interviews about the role of music in his process and about a preference for stories that feel rooted in Nigerian reality, often mixing English, Pidgin and local languages. Beyond that, details remain limited by design.
