Editi Effiong Biography

Editi Effiong is a Nigerian filmmaker, writer, producer, director and tech entrepreneur whose work has expanded the reach of Nollywood stories on the global stage. As founder and CEO of Anakle Films, he has delivered projects that combine commercial success with deliberate storytelling, most notably the 2023 action thriller The Black Book, which became one of Netflix’s most watched Nigerian titles worldwide.

Early Life and Background

Born on 20 July 1983 and hailing from Akwa Ibom State in southern Nigeria, Effiong grew up in a home shaped by books. His father studied literature and linguistics, filling the house with volumes that included the full African Writers Series. By age 12 he had already read the entire collection and decided he would pursue writing or filmmaking. His father initially opposed the artistic path, creating early tension, yet the exposure to literature remained decisive.

At 14 he completed a 300-page novel titled A Mile from Life. Around 17 he taught himself coding and design, later working in technology and product management roles, including country manager positions, before earning a degree in Environmental Science from the University of Calabar. These early experiences in writing, code and business formed the foundation for the companies he would later build.

Career Journey

In 2010 or early 2011 he founded Anakle, a digital marketing and technology agency that grew into one of Nigeria’s notable players in the space. The firm handled campaigns for brands such as Wikipedia, Globacom, Access Bank, Sterling Bank and others across advertising, tech and communications. Anakle Labs later focused on solutions for financial services and telecoms.

Filmmaking entered the picture in 2018 when he launched Anakle Films with a clear aim of producing the next generation of African stories. His first major production was Up North, directed by Tope Oshin. The film grossed about N94 million at the Nigerian box office and was later acquired by Netflix. He followed with The Setup in 2019, another Netflix acquisition that earned roughly N53 million theatrically. Day of Destiny, a sci-fi time-travel project he executive-produced in 2021, added further box-office numbers.

In 2020 he wrote and directed the short film Fishbone, shot in the Makoko area of Lagos. The project, made in partnership with the U.S. Mission in Nigeria and the U.S. Justice Department, examined pharmaceutical drug counterfeiting from the perspectives of both victims and perpetrators. It marked his first full directorial effort and reflected an interest in using film for social awareness.

His feature directorial debut arrived in 2023 with The Black Book, an action thriller he also wrote and produced on a budget of about one million dollars. Starring Richard Mofe-Damijo as a bereaved deacon seeking justice after his son is framed, the film drew on themes of corruption, grief and accountability. Released on Netflix in September 2023, it reached the platform’s global Top 10 in more than 60 countries and briefly entered the worldwide Top 3, becoming the most viewed English-language African title on the service at the time. Critics and audiences noted its production scale and narrative ambition relative to many earlier Nollywood releases.

In 2024 he signed with Zero Gravity Management, the Hollywood firm behind projects such as Ozark and Beasts of No Nation. A sequel, The Black Book 2: Old Scores, has since been announced, with Effiong returning as writer and director and Emmy-nominated producer Nicky Weinstock joining the team.

Notable Works and Achievements

Key credits include Up North (2018, producer and story), The Setup (2019, executive producer), Fishbone (2020, writer and director), Day of Destiny (2021, executive producer), The Setup 2 (2022, executive producer) and The Black Book (2023, writer, director and producer). The Black Book in particular set new benchmarks for Nigerian productions on streaming platforms through its viewership numbers and international chart performance. Earlier theatrical releases also demonstrated solid commercial returns in the local market. His dual background in tech entrepreneurship and film has positioned him as a bridge between Nigeria’s creative and technology communities, attracting investment and collaboration from both sectors.

Personal Life

Effiong is a father and has spoken openly about personal losses that inform his work. He lost a younger brother to cancer and, in 2015, his young son Bibi, who had been born prematurely at 24 weeks in 2013, survived an extended NICU stay and later passed after illness. These experiences of grief appear in the emotional core of The Black Book. He maintains a relatively private family life while describing himself publicly as a father, writer, producer and tech professional. Off-screen interests remain rooted in storytelling, technology and building sustainable structures for African content.
