Robert Oyimemise Peters stands as one of the most versatile and influential figures in contemporary Nollywood, a filmmaker whose work as director, producer, cinematographer and actor has helped push Nigerian cinema onto the global stage. Best known for helming some of the industry’s biggest commercial hits, he has quietly built a career defined by technical skill, cross-border collaborations and a steady commitment to elevating the craft.
Early life and background
Born on 6 June 1973 in Sabon Gari, Kaduna State, he is the second of eight children of Lawrence Adagba and Comfort Peters. Though raised largely between Kaduna and Jos, his roots lie in Ososo, in the Akoko Edo local government area of Edo State, and he is of Afemai descent.
He attended St. Gregory Primary School in Kaduna before studying Geology and Mining at the University of Jos. After graduating, he briefly worked in the oil services sector and later as a graduate assistant, yet the pull of storytelling proved stronger. By the late 1990s he had moved to Lagos and begun finding his way into the growing Nigerian film industry.
Career journey
Peters made his screen debut as an actor in the 1998 film Mama Sunday. A few years later he appeared as Paul in the popular daytime series Everyday People, created by Tajudeen Adepetu. Those early roles gave him a foothold, but he soon recognised that his interest lay as much behind the camera as in front of it.
In the mid-2000s he relocated to the United States, where he studied visual storytelling at New York University. He gained practical experience through the Film Career Connection programme in Atlanta and specialised training on Red cameras with REDucation. That period sharpened his technical eye and prepared him for the dual role of cinematographer and director that would define the next phase of his career.
Working on both Nollywood and African-American productions, he gradually built a reputation for reliability and visual polish. Collaborations with established names across continents followed, and by the early 2010s he was ready to take the director’s chair on larger projects.
Notable works and achievements
The turning point came in 2014 with 30 Days in Atlanta, the comedy he directed for Ayo Makun. The film became the highest-grossing Nigerian movie at the box office at the time and later earned a place in the Guinness World Records alongside major titles from Bollywood and Hollywood for its domestic earnings. It featured a wide cast that included Ramsey Nouah, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Vivica A. Fox, Lynn Whitfield and many others, and it proved that Nigerian comedies could travel and compete commercially.
He followed that success with A Trip to Jamaica in 2016, again working with AY. The film surpassed the earlier box-office marks, becoming one of the highest-grossing titles in West African cinema and further cementing his status as a director who could deliver both laughs and solid returns. Other notable credits include Shades of Attractions, Boxing Day, and a range of projects as cinematographer and producer.
Over the years he has collected recognition at the Golden Icons Academy Movie Awards, including a Best Director honour, as well as awards from NAFCA and other industry platforms. His body of work reflects a consistent ability to move between acting, shooting and directing while maintaining high production values.
Personal life
Peters is married to Deborah Peters. The couple have a son, Zachary, and together they run Whitestone Pictures LLC, a production studio and equipment rental house based in Georgia. The company has become a base for his ongoing work that bridges Nigerian and American film communities.
Closing thought
What stands out about Robert Peters is the quiet determination with which he has moved from geology classrooms and early acting gigs to the director’s chair of record-breaking comedies. In an industry that often celebrates loud personalities, he has let the work speak, steadily raising the technical and commercial bar for Nollywood stories that reach audiences far beyond Nigeria. That steady hand continues to shape the films audiences still talk about years later.
