Niyi Akinmolayan Biography
Niyi Akinmolayan is a Nigerian filmmaker and director whose work has helped shape the commercial and creative direction of modern Nollywood. Known for delivering some of the industry’s highest grossing titles, he has built a reputation for combining technical polish with stories that connect with wide audiences. As the founder and creative director of Anthill Studios, he has also expanded the production capacity available to Nigerian filmmakers.
Early life and background
Born on 3 November 1982, Akinmolayan hails from Ondo State in South West Nigeria and is of Yoruba descent. He studied electrical and electronics engineering at Yaba College of Technology. From an early age he showed interest in media and design rather than the scientific path his father encouraged. While still in school he explored graphic design, animation and other screen based work. After leaving college he took on freelance media jobs, including church media projects, corporate videos and documentaries. These early experiences sharpened his skills in video editing, animation, after effects and visual effects.
He apprenticed under established Nollywood directors, most notably working with Desmond Elliot as an assistant, technical director and editor. In 2008 he registered Anthill Studios, initially to handle post production and visual effects. The company later grew into a full production facility based in Lagos.
Career journey
His first feature film, Kajola, was released in 2010. It was an ambitious experiment in visual effects, but the response from critics and industry peers was largely negative. The experience taught him valuable lessons about storytelling and audience expectations. He continued refining his craft through smaller projects, including the dance film Make a Move in 2014, which earned a nomination for Best Movie Drama at the 2015 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
In 2015 he directed Falling, starring Adesua Etomi, Desmond Elliot and Blossom Chukwujekwu. The film brought Adesua Etomi the Best Actress award at the 2016 AMVCA and earned Akinmolayan a Best Director nomination at the Nigeria Entertainment Awards. That same year he also released Out of Luck. By 2016 he had produced the short animated film PlayThing, which premiered to positive reviews at the FilmOne IMAX cinema in Lekki.
The turning point came with The Wedding Party 2 in 2017. The film, starring Banky W, Adesua Etomi, Richard Mofe Damijo and others, became one of the highest grossing Nigerian films of its time. He followed it with Chief Daddy in 2018, another commercial success that confirmed his ability to deliver popular entertainment. The Set Up arrived in 2019, adding further momentum. In 2021 he released both Prophetess and My Village People, two more titles that ranked among the top fifty highest grossing Nigerian films.
In January 2022 Anthill Studios signed a multi year agreement with Amazon Prime Video. The deal made the platform the exclusive global streaming home for Anthill’s theatrical releases after their Nigerian cinema runs. Subsequent projects have included Chief Daddy 2, The House of Secrets, Mikolo and the historical epic Lisabi: The Uprising in 2024, which marked a shift toward larger scale storytelling rooted in Yoruba history.
Notable works and achievements
Akinmolayan’s filmography is defined by consistent box office performance. Five of his directed features rank in the top fifty highest grossing Nigerian films: The Wedding Party 2, Chief Daddy, Prophetess, My Village People and The Set Up. He has also worked across animation, producing the series Adventures of Lola and Chuchu in collaboration with FrieslandCampina, and short films such as Room 315, which emerged from an open writing competition he organised.
His films have screened at international festivals, including The Arbitration at the Toronto International Film Festival. Nominations have come from the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, Nigeria Entertainment Awards and other industry platforms. Beyond directing he has taken on writing, producing and post production roles, often contributing visual effects and colour work through Anthill Studios. The studio itself has grown into a recognised facility that supports both his own projects and those of other filmmakers.
Personal life
He is married to Victoria Akujobi. Public details about their family life remain limited, as he generally keeps personal matters private. His mother, a tailor who was known for her storytelling and community involvement, passed away in 2012. He has spoken about how her influence shaped his approach to narrative. His father died in 2023. Off screen he maintains a focus on building sustainable production infrastructure in Lagos and mentoring emerging talent through open calls and collaborative projects.
Closing thought
Akinmolayan’s path from engineering student and freelance designer to one of Nollywood’s most reliable commercial directors shows how technical skill and commercial instinct can work together. Through Anthill Studios and a growing list of audience favoured films, he continues to expand what Nigerian cinema can deliver both at home and on global platforms.
