Hilda Dokubo Biography

Hilda Dokubo stands as one of Nollywood’s enduring figures, a veteran actress, producer, author, and advocate whose work has shaped both the screen and the conversations around social issues in Nigeria for more than three decades.

Hilda Dokubo Early life and background

Born on 22 October 1969 in Buguma, Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State, she was the first of six children. Her father worked as an engineer and her mother as a school teacher. She grew up in Port Harcourt, attending St. Mary State School on Aggrey Road for her primary education and Government Girls Secondary School for secondary. From a young age the performing arts claimed her attention. At seven, the Rivers State Council for Arts and Culture discovered her during a talent hunt at her primary school. That discovery led to radio work, stage performances, and eventually a role as a continuity announcer on Rivers State Television. By the time she entered the University of Port Harcourt to study Theatre Arts, the path felt natural even if her mother had hoped she would read Law.

Hilda Dokubo Career journey

Her formal entry into Nollywood came during her National Youth Service in 1992 with the film Evil Passion. From that point she became part of the early wave of actors who helped define the industry’s video film era. She appeared in titles such as Gone Forever, End of the Wicked, My Goodwill and later The CEO. After establishing herself as an actress she moved behind the camera as well, producing and directing. One of her early efforts as producer and director, Another Campus Tale, tackled student cultism at a time when the problem claimed many young lives. The Ministry of Education distributed the film to schools. She also produced the advocacy film Goodbye Tomorrow on HIV and AIDS, helping open space for issue based storytelling in Nigerian cinema.

Hilda Dokubo achievements

Her performances continued to earn recognition. In 2015 her supporting role in Stigma brought her the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role as well as Best Actress in the comedy category at the same awards. She also received Outstanding Female Act in a Film at the 12th Abuja International Film Festival. Later credits include Locked in 2019, a film that addressed mental health, and more recent appearances in titles such as Accidental Affair, A Sunday Affair and Wives on Strike: The Uprising. Beyond the screen she founded the Centre for Creative Arts Education, known as CREATE, which uses the arts to empower women and young people. She has served as Special Adviser on Youth Affairs to former Rivers State Governor Peter Odili and has remained active in public life and advocacy, including participation in protests against gender based violence and police brutality.

Hilda Dokubo Personal life

On the personal side she has spoken openly about early hardships. Her father died when she was nine, a loss that changed the family’s circumstances. She married Karo Mrakpor, with whom she has a son, Tuvi. The couple experienced a period of separation before reconciling. She has also spoken of supporting many other children beyond her biological son, describing a commitment to young people that extends far beyond her immediate family. Faith, teaching and mentoring remain central to how she describes her life off camera.

Closing thought

What stands out about her story is the consistency. From a child discovered in a Port Harcourt classroom to a seasoned actress, producer and advocate, she has treated the craft as both art and responsibility. Nollywood has grown and changed many times over, yet voices like hers continue to remind the industry of its power to reflect society and, at times, to push it forward.
