Bimbo Manuel Biography
Bimbo Manuel stands as one of Nollywood’s most consistent and respected veterans, a performer whose measured presence and craft have helped shape Nigerian screen storytelling for more than four decades. From early television dramas to contemporary streaming series, he has remained a reliable figure whose work prioritises substance over flash.
Born on 30 October 1958 in Lagos State, he spent part of his growing years in Ibadan. Secondary school there exposed him to the rich radio culture of the Western Region, where voices like Tunji Marquis and others made broadcasting feel like an art form. He once considered a career in the military around the time of the civil war and even passed the relevant exams, but his parents steered him away from that path. Instead he pursued Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating with a focus that included directing. The university years placed him in the company of strong theatrical minds and gave him early stage experience in productions such as The Gods Are Not to Blame and Hopes of the Living Dead.
His professional start came in 1985 as a broadcaster with the Ogun State Broadcasting Corporation. He later moved to Ogun State Television, handling continuity announcing, news reading and show hosting. Those early days taught discipline, respect for time and the value of clear communication skills that would serve him well when he shifted more fully into acting the following year. The transition was gradual. He appeared in television dramas at a time when fees could be as low as twenty naira per episode, and payment often lagged by months. He worked through the era of Village Headmaster, Ripples, Checkmate and other landmark soaps, building a reputation for reliability and range.
As the home video boom took hold, he moved fluidly into feature films. Roles in titles such as State of Emergency, Sitanda, Tango with Me, Heroes & Zeros, Torn, Dazzling Mirage, October 1 and 93 Days showed an actor comfortable with both supporting and more central parts. He has never been one to chase quantity. Quality and the chance to stretch as a performer have guided his choices. Beyond acting he has written and directed, including the feature Esohe, which earned Best Screenplay at the Nollywood Travelling Festival in Toronto. Stage work has remained important to him as well, with contributions to productions under Bolanle Austen-Peters and his own plays such as Philomena: Interview with a Prostitute.
Television has continued to offer strong platforms. Long runs on Tinsel and appearances in The Governor, Castle and Castle, King of Boys: The Return of the King and more recently Princess on a Hill as Moyosore Lawson have kept him visible to new audiences. The latter role brought a nomination for Best Lead Actor at the AMVCA, recognition that underscored how his craft has only deepened with time. He has also been nominated for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2013 Nollywood Movies Awards. Industry observers often note his preference for principled choices and his willingness to speak on standards within the business.
Away from the cameras he has kept his private life largely out of the spotlight. He married Mojisola Manuel in 1998 after years of prioritising career over marriage. The couple have four children. He has spoken openly about meeting her later than many expected and about the purpose she brought into his life. His wife’s academic achievements, including a doctorate and professorship, are points of quiet pride. Family remains a deliberate priority, protected from the more chaotic edges of public life.
What stands out after all these years is the steadiness. In an industry that moves quickly and often rewards noise, Bimbo Manuel has built a body of work defined by care, range and longevity. Younger actors can look at the path he has walked and see that staying power comes from respect for the craft, for colleagues and for the stories being told. That kind of example still matters.
