Charles Novia Biography

Charles Osa Igbinovia, better known as Charles Novia, stands as one of Nollywood’s most distinctive voices, a filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, actor, and sharp social commentator whose work has helped shape the industry’s romantic storytelling tradition and its ongoing conversations about craft and growth.

Born on 20 November 1971 in Benin City, Edo State, he grew up in a home rich with creative energy. His mother, Madam Clara Uwaifo, was a devout Christian, a trained colonial teacher, and a singer. She was also the older sister of the legendary Sir Victor Uwaifo. His father, David Oghogho Igbinovia, was a gifted but unpublished writer. That environment left its mark early. By age six he had written his first poem. By eight he had completed a short novel. By eleven he had produced about ten handwritten novels that his mother proudly showed visitors.

Acting came just as naturally. Around the age of seven a school teacher named Mr. Dickson spotted his talent and cast him as the lawyer in Zulu Sofola’s play The Wizard of Law. They performed it at school assembly. From there the stage and local television roles followed. In 1983 he appeared in his first major television drama produced by Emma Edokpayi. Programmes like Hotel De Jordan, Pot of Life, and the national network’s Village Headmaster had already stirred something in him. Benin City, the city of his childhood and his art, gave him both the culture and the early platform.

He entered the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, determined to study Dramatic Arts, the course he had wanted since childhood. He graduated in 1993 at twenty-two with a Bachelor of Arts degree. While there he wrote plays, some of which were performed in the department under the guidance of theatre scholars such as Professors Amankulor, Ossie Enekwe, Eni Jones Umuko, and Emeka Nwabueze.

After youth service he joined the Nigerian Television Authority network in 1994. For the next five years he worked as a presenter, actor, and production hand. He appeared in the sitcom One Big Family and quietly wrote scripts for several home video blockbusters of the mid-1990s, though he asked not to be credited. By 1999 restlessness set in. He left NTA as a contract staff and stepped fully into the growing home video industry, ready to put his own stamp on it.

The early 2000s brought the breakthrough. He specialised in romantic dramas and quickly earned the unofficial title of king of love stories. Films such as When Love Dies (2003), which sold hundreds of thousands of copies, and Missing Angel (2004) changed the commercial conversation. Missing Angel received a proper premiere and billboards across Lagos, a rare marketing push at the time, and went on to sell over a million copies. It remains one of the titles he and many fans still call a Nollywood classic. Other notable works followed in steady succession: The Bridesmaid (2005), Caught in the Middle (2007), the Atlanta series, Alan Poza (2013), and Put a Ring on It (2016). Through November Productions he directed and produced more than fifty films in his first decade alone, working with and helping shape talents who later became household names.

Beyond the camera he stayed restless. He launched November Records and worked with artists including Majek Fashek. In 2012 he published Nollywood till November: Memoirs of a Nollywood Insider, the first major book by a practising filmmaker that pulled back the curtain on the industry’s struggles, marketer politics, and personal journeys. In 2014 the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences selected him as part of the Nigerian team to screen films for the Best Foreign Language category. He later founded Teen Africa TV, a channel focused on younger audiences, extending his media reach beyond feature films.

On the personal side he has kept a relatively private profile. He married Happy Novia in 2000, when he was twenty-nine. She has been both his co-producer and steady support. They have a daughter, Nosakhare, often called Nosa, who later graduated with a first-class degree in Film and Literature from the University of Warwick. In public reflections he has repeatedly named his wife and daughter as the pillars that keep him grounded.

What lingers about Charles Novia is the combination of early prodigy energy, professional restlessness, and a willingness to speak plainly about an industry he helped build. From the handwritten novels of a Benin City boy to the million-copy sellers and the first insider memoir, his path has always been about storytelling on his own terms. That impulse continues to matter in a Nollywood still finding new ways to tell its stories.
