Tade Ogidan Biography

Akintade Ogidan, known professionally as Tade Ogidan, is a Nigerian screenwriter, producer and director whose work has shaped both television drama and feature films in the Nollywood industry for more than three decades. Born in July 1960 in Lagos, he has built a reputation for thoughtful storytelling that moves easily between English and Yoruba productions, creating memorable characters and stories that still resonate with audiences.

Early Life and Background

Ogidan was born in Lagos to middle-class parents, Akinola and Rachael Ogidan. He grew up in Surulere, a lively suburb of Lagos State, during the 1960s and 1970s. His early education took place at Government Demonstration School and Surulere Baptist School, both in Surulere. Between 1972 and 1974 he attended Ekiti Parapo College in Ido-Ekiti before completing secondary school at Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School in Ikeja, Lagos, graduating in 1978.

In 1979 he travelled to the United States for tertiary education. He studied Film, Radio and Television Production at Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, New Mexico, and later spent a short period at the State University of New York in Buffalo, where he focused on Theatre Arts. Those years abroad gave him practical grounding in production techniques that he would later bring back home.

Career Journey

After returning to Nigeria, Ogidan completed his National Youth Service Corps programme at the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in Lagos between 1982 and 1983. He stayed on and rose to become a full-time producer and director at NTA Channel 10 while also working as a continuity announcer at NTA 2 Channel 5. Over roughly eight years at the network he directed and produced episodes of popular drama series including Play of the Week, Tele Theatre, Legal Angle and The New Village Headmaster. Standout works from that period include Blinking Hope, The Boys Next Door and To Save a Falling Angel. One project, The Reign of Abiku (written by Sola Osofisan), collected several awards at the Nigerian Festival of Television Programmes (NIFETEP) in 1986.

In 1990 he left NTA to establish his own production company, OGD Pictures Ltd, named after his surname. The move marked the start of a prolific independent career. His early feature films quickly made an impact. Owo Blow (1995), a Yoruba-language crime drama, turned Taiwo Hassan (popularly known as Ogogo) into a major star. Out of Bounds (1997) and Diamond Ring (1998) followed, helping launch or elevate the careers of actors such as Bimbo Akintola and Teju Babyface. Hostages (1998) became another notable title from that era.

Throughout the 2000s and 2010s he continued delivering consistent work. Saving Alero (2001), Ayomida (2003), Dangerous Twins (2004), Aya mi òwòn: Madam Dearest (2005), Family on Fire (2011) and Playing Games (2012) kept his name relevant. In 2019 he returned after a long gap with Gold Statue, a comedy-adventure drama that had been conceived as far back as 1991. The film starred Gabriel Afolayan, Kunle Remi, Richard Mofe-Damijo and Sola Sobowale, among others, and was shot across several cities.

Beyond features, Ogidan has produced television series and reality programmes such as Behind the Siege, Crime Fighters, The Teju Babyface Show, The Intern and The Next Titan. His company has also handled television commercials for major brands and staged large live events, including the Lagos State Governor’s Education Awards in 2013 and 2014, which featured hundreds of secondary school pupils performing alongside established actors.

It also took Best Feature Film at the Lekki International Film Festival the same year.

Many of his projects have won awards both in Nigeria and abroad. He is equally known for spotting and nurturing talent, giving several actors career-defining roles that elevated them within the industry. His versatility across languages and formats, from television drama to feature films and commercials, has made OGD Pictures a respected name for quality production values.
