John Dumelo Biography
John Dumelo is a Ghanaian actor whose work has long bridged Ghallywood and Nollywood, earning him recognition across West Africa as one of the region’s most consistent leading men.
He has appeared in more than eighty films, shared screens with major Nigerian stars, and built a parallel life in farming and public service that has taken him into Ghana’s Parliament and the Ministry of Food and Agriculture.
Early Life and Background
John Matthew Kofi Setor Dumelo was born on 3 February 1984 in Accra. His family roots lie in Likpe Bala in the Oti Region and Hohoe in the Volta Region. He is the only son of civil engineer John Dumelo and customs officer Antoinette Dumelo, and has two older sisters.
He began school at Christ the King School in Accra. While still a pupil there, GAMA Film Company visited the school and cast him in the 1992 film Baby Thief. He was seven years old and received twenty thousand old Ghana cedis for the role. Secondary education followed at Achimota School, where he joined the drama club. He later enrolled at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology to study civil engineering but did not complete the programme. At KNUST he won the Mr University contest. He subsequently studied at the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration in public service and governance.
Career Journey
After the childhood role in Baby Thief, he appeared in television series such as Suncity and About to Wed. The real turning point came in 2008 with The King Is Mine, in which he played a king. The performance brought wider attention and opened doors to bigger projects on both sides of the Ghana-Nigeria border.
He quickly became a regular in major productions. Films such as Heart of Men (2009), The Perfect Picture (2009), A Private Storm (2010), The Maidens, 4 Play, Chelsea, The Game, and the Adams Apples series established him as a reliable lead. He worked alongside Nigerian actors including Ramsey Nouah, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, and Ini Edo, as well as Ghanaian colleagues such as Jackie Appiah, Majid Michel, and Nadia Buari. Later credits include A Northern Affair (2014), Love or Something Like That, Double Cross, Beautiful Ruins, The Perfect Picture: Ten Years Later, Blood Vessel (2023), and Hijack ’93 (2024).
Beyond acting he launched the clothing line J.Melo in 2012 and invested heavily in commercial farming, managing large acreages of crops and livestock. The farming work later shaped his public profile as an advocate for agriculture.
Notable Works and Achievements
Key titles that defined his screen presence include The King Is Mine, Heart of Men, The Perfect Picture, A Private Storm, The Maidens, and A Northern Affair. The latter film brought particular acclaim.
In 2009 Joy FM named him Best Ghanaian Actor. He received nominations at the Africa Movie Academy Awards for Most Promising Actor (Heart of Men) and Best Actor in a Supporting Role (A Private Storm). In 2011 he won African Most Outstanding Actor at the Afro Australian Movies and Music Awards. The Ghana Movie Awards gave him Best Actor in a Leading Role for A Northern Affair in 2013. In 2017 he collected the Best Actor West Africa prize at FESPACO for the same film. He has also been recognised for philanthropy, including support for education and health projects through the Dumelo Foundation established in 2010.
Personal Life
He married lawyer Gifty Mawunya Nkornu in a traditional ceremony in 2018, followed by a white wedding at Royal Senchi Resort in Akosombo the following year. The couple have three children: a son born in 2018, a daughter born in 2022, and another son born in 2024. He keeps much of his family life private while remaining active on social media and in community work.
In politics he campaigned for the National Democratic Congress, contested the Ayawaso West Wuogon seat in 2020, and won it in 2024. In March 2025 he was sworn in as Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture.
John Dumelo’s path from a seven-year-old schoolboy on a film set to one of the most recognisable faces in West African cinema, and later to Parliament and the agriculture ministry, shows a steady expansion of interests rather than a single focus. He continues to balance the screen, the farm, and public office with the same practical energy that first put him in front of the camera more than three decades ago.
