Kate Henshaw Biography

Kate Henshaw stands among the enduring faces of Nollywood, a performer whose work has helped define the industry’s growth from its early video era into a global force. For more than three decades she has delivered memorable roles with quiet strength and consistent craft, earning respect from audiences and peers alike.
Early life and background
She was born on 19 July 1971 in Cross River State, the eldest of four children. Her early years mixed life in Lagos and Calabar. Primary school was at St. Mary Private School in Ajele, Lagos. Secondary education took her to Federal Government Girls College in Calabar.
After a year of remedial studies at the University of Calabar, she trained in medical microbiology at the School of Medical Laboratory Science, Lagos University Teaching Hospital. She later worked at Bauchi State General Hospital. Before the cameras called, she also modelled and appeared in commercials, including one for Shield deodorant. That early comfort in front of the lens would prove useful.
Career journey
In 1993 a friend invited her to an audition. She tried out for the lead in When the Sun Sets and got the part. The role marked her first major Nollywood appearance and opened the door. From there the work came steadily. She moved through the busy years of the industry’s expansion, taking on characters that demanded both presence and subtlety.
Over time her filmography grew past forty five titles. She became a familiar face in stories that mixed drama, family tension, and social questions. Later she expanded beyond acting, serving as a judge on Nigeria’s Got Talent and taking on brand ambassador roles, including for Onga. In 2015 the Cross River State government appointed her Special Adviser on Liaison in Lagos, showing another side of her public life.
Through shifts in production styles and audience tastes she stayed active. That longevity says as much about discipline as talent.
Notable works and achievements
Stronger Than Pain brought her the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2008. The performance remains a high point. She earned another AMAA nomination in 2018 for Roti. In 2017 she won Best Supporting Actress in an English language film at the Best of Nollywood Awards for The Women.
Her credits include early work such as Domitilla, later titles like Chief Daddy, New Money, The Ghost and the House of Truth, 4th Republic, and the series Blood Sisters. Each role added to a body of work that feels both varied and recognisable. In 2011 the Nigerian government honoured her as a Member of the Order of the Federal Republic.
Personal life
She married British born Roderick James Nuttal in 1999. Their daughter Gabrielle was born the following year. The marriage ended in divorce in 2011. She has kept her daughter largely out of the public eye, choosing privacy for that part of her life. Off screen she is known for her interest in fitness and for speaking up on issues she cares about, including support for people in need. She is also a cousin of media personality Andre Blaze.
A closing thought
Watching Kate Henshaw work across the years feels like watching someone who simply understands the job. She arrived when Nollywood was still finding its feet and stayed while it grew up. The award, the long list of films, the national honour, they matter. What stays with many viewers is the steady professionalism and the sense that she has always treated the craft with care. In an industry that moves fast, that kind of consistency remains rare and welcome.
